As such research advances, I think a day will come when we begin to see the relationship between complex trauma and gaslighting more clearly.
[U.S. FAU Study] Even “ignoring” someone online can deeply wound the heart: It’s time to recognize the fear of cyberbullying
“Just a little trash talk” or “I was only left out of the group LINE chat”—has it really been nothing more than “a little”? A nationwide survey conducted in 2025 by Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in the United Stateshas revealed that the effects of cyberbullying are not limited to visible threats or attacks.
In fact, online exclusion and insults that may seem minor at first glance can cause serious damage to a child’s heart.
■ A striking 87% have experienced some form of cyberbullying
A research team from FAU and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire surveyed about 2,700 middle and high school students in the U.S. about 18 types of online bullying victimization and its mental effects.
The results were astonishing:about 87% of students had experiencedsome form of cyberbullying. Moreover,it was not so much the intensity of the attack asthe number of times they were bulliedthat was deeply linked to the extent of emotional injury.
Most people focus on the intensity of an attack, right? But in reality, the severity of a single incident often has little to do with how deeply it wounds the heart; rather, the number of times—meaning attacks that continue and repeat over time—are more likely to become traumatic. I have experienced this from anonymous accounts myself, and as you can tell, it is abnormal; they keep going for years, so I think you can imagine that strange persistence. The aggressor’s fixation is abnormal. What we need to do isbuild a society where persistent, repeated, abnormal aggressors can be sent to prison. Of course, carrying a knife and killing someone must never happen. But likewise, we must understand that attacks from abnormal people who repeatedly carry out “small attacks” are also equivalent to manslaughter or murder. Leaving such abnormal aggressors unnoticed may be like scattering people who could carry out indiscriminate killings all over the place. Those who repeatedly harm others and drive them to death should go to prison; I believe that is important. For that reason, we need to move forward step by step and not settle for saying cyberbullying is simply bad; we must strictly crack down on its repetitiveness.
