What is gaslighting? And why is it attracting attention now?
Until now, the internet has been flooded with deeply distorted information that equated gaslighting with delusion, but recently, accurate knowledge about gaslighting has been spreading worldwide.
Since I covered gaslighting in the previous article, in this piece I wrote about it with “ChatGPT o4-mini-high,” referring to a research paper by a psychologist at the University of Sydney.
ChatGPT o4-mini-high “Assistant professor level” 🧠 Intelligence: While retaining the fast, ready-to-use strength of o4-mini, it can also handle deeper logical development and critical evaluation. A level that can oversee multiple tasks across domains and also provide explanations and instruction. 🤝 EQ (emotional ability): The ability to facilitate smooth communication within a team and mentor junior members. The ability to read subtle nuances in dialogue and strengthen collaboration through appropriate feedback.
「Could it be that I’m the one who’s strange?」 —Have you ever been led to doubt your own memories or feelings in that way? It may be the result of a psychological manipulation called **gaslighting**. Gaslighting isthe repeated use of words and actions that shake another person’s sense of reality and self-trust in order to exert psychological control—not only in families and romantic relationships, but also in workplaces, medical settings, and politics,a “hard to see, yet serious” form of psychological abuse. In 2025, Dr. Lillian Darke and other psychologists at the University of Sydney published acomprehensive academic reviewthat sheds light on the full picture of gaslighting. Drawing on research from medicine, psychology, sociology, and philosophy, it clarifies what gaslighting is, why it happens, and how it should be addressed. According to this review, gaslighting is not simply a matter of personality, but rathera phenomenon that exploits social power structures and institutional weaknessesand it has become a legal issue that cannot be overlooked.
In the body of this article, we will explain the findings of this noteworthy paper in a way that is easy for general readers to understand, while consideringthe reality and dangers of gaslighting, as well as the need for future social countermeasures.
